A TEXAN EXPLAINS THE HOLY NAME

The holy name cannot be spoken.
It disappears from the mouth as you try
to form it.
The space between syllables widens
becoming a sky unto itself.

In that sky
a name too formal to be used is forgotten.
Why call someone who is always here?

Does the husband call his wife to the bridal bed
when she is already waiting there?
When the wife’s mouth is on his
does he stop to ask for a glass of water?

    “I do not know how much nectar the two syllables ‘Krish-na’ have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.”

  2. Every mouth is Krsna’s, every ear. When Krsna speaks His own name, a billion mouths open wider for the tongue to dance inside them. The floor of the ocean becomes a dance floor. Waves are set in motion that cover the world. We are carried away, coiled inside water salty as the amniotic sac. The heart becomes still and the mind serves that heart quietly, its only job to listen for the sound of the flute.
